Reverse Faulting Within a Continental Plate Boundary Transform System

چکیده

Contractional deformation is common along transform plate margins where motion oblique to the boundary. While faults that accommodate this are often inferred be subsidiary main boundary fault, we typically lack direct geometric or kinematic information. Here investigate timing of faulting relative changes in orientation North American-Pacific Coeval with development an segment (i.e., “Big Bend” San Andreas fault), active shortening have initiated at ?5 Ma Western Transverse Ranges (WTR). However, new low-temperature thermochronometric data yield Miocene Pleistocene apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He cooling ages and partially reset zircon (U-Th)/He ages. Inverse thermal modeling indicate reverse as early 10 Ma, several million years prior our current understanding Big Bend. Reverse WTR also propagate from west east, toward Fault, rather than outwards it. New existing thermochronometry delineate locus rapid post-Miocene exhumation, demonstrate similar exhumation not present broader region surrounding We posit localized because a weak underlying lithosphere predates more recent anomaly restraining bend margin.

A Generalized Reverse Jacket Transform

Generalization of the well-known Walsh–Hadamard transform (WHT), namely center-weighted Hadamard transform (CWHT) and complex reverse-jacket transform (CRJT) have been proposed and their fast implementation and simple index generation algorithms have recently been reported. These transforms are of size 2 2 for integral values or , and defined in terms of binary radix representation of integers....

From Continental Drift to Plate Tectonics

SINCE THE l6TH CENTURY, CARTOGRAPHERS HAVE NOTICED THE jigsaw-puzzle fit of the continental edges. Since the 19th century, geologists have known that some fossil plants and animals are extraordinarily similar across the globe, and some sequences of rock formations in distant continents are also strikingly alike. At the turn of the 20th century, Austrian geologist Eduard Suess proposed the theor...

The tectonic crustal stress field and style of faulting along the Pacific North America Plate boundary in Southern California

S U M M A R Y We invert for the state of stress in the southern California crust using a catalogue of high quality earthquake focal mechanisms (1981–2010). The stress field is best resolved where seismicity rates are high and sufficient data are available to constrain the stress field across most of the region. From the stress field, we determine the maximum horizontal compressive stress (SHmax...

Atmospheric Controls on Soil Moisture–Boundary Layer Interactions. Part II: Feedbacks within the Continental United States

The CTP-HIlow framework for describing atmospheric controls on soil moisture–boundary layer interactions is described in a companion paper, Part I. In this paper, the framework is applied to the continental United States to investigate how differing atmospheric regimes influence local feedbacks between the land surface and the atmosphere. The framework was developed with a one-dimensional bound...

The Pacific Megagash: A future plate boundary?

Seismic anisotropy is an efficient way to investigate the deformation field within the upper mantle. In the framework of rigid tectonic plates, we make use of recent tomographic models of azimuthal anisotropy for deriving the best rotation pole of the Pacific plate in the uppermost 200km of the mantle. It is found to be in good agreement with current plate motion (NUVEL1, HS3 and NNR). However,...
